Gas Turbine Engine Control Systems & Software Programs

MANNARINO has developed systems and software for several single and dual channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems used for turboshaft, turboprop and turbofan engine applications.

MANNARINO development program responsibilities have included:

  • System safety assessment including creation of the Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA) and Systems Safety Assessment (SSA) documents
  • System configuration and requirements definition/management
  • Development and verification of the engine FADEC boot loader, operating system & control system software to RTCA/DO-178B guidelines for Level A
  • Configuration design of the engine overspeed protection system
  • Design of the FADEC channel switchover logic
  • Developing Programmable Logic Device (PLD) hardware planning and requirements specifications to RTCA/DO-254 Level A guidelines
  • Complete software life cycle support
  • Fault management/built-in-test software design
  • Control law design & stability/dynamic analysis
  • System Closed Loop Bench (CLB) development with engine simulation in the loop
  • Support customer testing (test cell & aircraft)
  • Certification testing on open and closed loop benches
  • Supporting engine and aircraft certification efforts with various certification authorities

All system safety process deliverables (ie. FHA, PSSA, SSA, etc.) are developed in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Recommended Practices (ARP) 4761; “Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment”.

US Army Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter Program (Honeywell HTS900)

In the interest of capturing a larger turboshaft engine market share, Honeywell launched the development of the HTS900 engine. Based on the successful development work performed on the LTS101-850F-2B engine, MANNARINO was once again selected as part of the team to develop the engine FADEC system. The engine was subsequently selected to power the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter ARH-70A.

Development program responsibilities assigned to MANNARINO included:

  • Conducting system safety analysis (FHA & PSSA)
  • System configuration & requirements definition
  • Control law design & stability/dynamic analysis
  • Development & verification of the engine FADEC application software (operating system software and control system software) in accordance with RTCA/DO-178B guidelines for Level A including fault management/built-in-test (BIT) functionality
  • System closed loop bench development & testing with engine simulation in the loop
  • Test cell & aircraft testing support

Cessna CJ1/2/3 (Williams FJ44/33)

The Cessna Citation CJ3 is a proven business jet with a remarkable combination of power, speed and flexibility and is considered the CJ family flagship aircraft. The CJ3 aircraft is powered by fuel-efficient Williams FJ44-3A turbofan engines controlled by a Goodrich dual-channel FADEC.

MANNARINO development program responsibilities included:

  • Conducting system safety analysis (FHA & PSSA)
  • Developing, verifying & qualifying the FADEC operating system software to RTCA/DO-178B guidelines for Level A
  • Configuration design of the engine overspeed protection system
  • Designing the FADEC channel switchover logic
  • Developing PLD hardware requirements specifications to RTCA/DO-254 Level A guidelines
  • Supporting engine & aircraft certification efforts with the FAA

The success for MANNARINO in this program lies in the fact that this generic operating system software has also been installed on over 20 other airframe applications without modification.

Bell 407 (Rolls-Royce 250-C47)

The Bell 407 helicopter delivers the best speed, payload and range in its class.

MANNARINO development program responsibilities included:

  • System development of a reversionary electronic engine control channel
  • System, software & hardware requirements definition
  • Backup Power Turbine Speed governor analysis and design
  • Engine FADEC system and software open & closed loop bench testing verification

Generic Turbomeca FADEC (ARRIUS, ARRIEL & ARDIDEN)

Turbomeca, a member of the SAFRAN Group, is a leading helicopter engine manufacturer. Since its inception, the company has produced over 50,000 turbine engines based on its own designs. The Goodrich FADEC was developed to control the ARRIUS, ARRIEL and ARDIDEN engines.

MANNARINO development program responsibilities included:

  • Development of a methodology to verify, per the RTCA/DO-178B guidelines for Level A, high-level software requirements of a next-generation, multi-platform, partitioned triple microprocessor ECU
  • Supporting engine and aircraft certification efforts with the applicable certification authorities, including EASA
  • Developing the Operating Systems Software Design document
  • Verification of operating system software using an automated test bench

Cessna Citation Encore+

MANNARINO was responsible for the multi-engine Data Collection Unit (DCU) Data Management & Diagnostics Software. MANNARINO responsibilities included:

  • System level requirements definition for:
    • DCU data management system
    • Non-volatile memory data management system
  • Software requirements definition
  • Software design through pictures-to-code (SCADE)
  • Software/Hardware integration

HH-65A “Dolphin”

In the quest for more power, the Honeywell LTS101-850F-2B engine was launched to meet the US Coast Guard new requirements for the short range HH-65A "Dolphin" aircraft. MANNARINO joined the development team and was entrusted with the following development responsibilities:

  • System configuration & requirements definition
  • Development & verification of the engine FADEC application software (operating system software and control system software)
  • System closed loop bench development
  • Closed loop bench/test cell/ground/flight testing
  • Support CLB, test cell and aircraft testing

LM 200 ~ LHTEC CPT800

MANNARINO was responsible for the development of the control system verification test plan, including the FADEC closed loop bench test procedures for the engine and propeller control laws, as well as FADEC failure modes & effects demonstration.
